What is the Foundation?

Every parent has a Foundation for parenting. This Foundation may be weak, or it may be strong.

Parents with a strong Foundation have a secure, well-defined sense of spirituality. They understand that being stuck means they need to work on themselves before trying to change their kids. They have supportive relationships, and are using their talents not only to parent, but to “give back” to their communities. These parents are able to draw on their relationship with God for wisdom, strength, and patience. This does not necessarily mean parenting always goes smoothly. But these parents have an ability to regroup after things go haywire.

Parents with weak Foundations get easily stuck in unhealthy, even hurtful parenting “ruts”. They tend to easily fall into a trap of defining themselves according to their careers or their children’s accomplishments. They have little joy in parenting. They put much of their energy into “fixing” their kids, with little focus on their own learning and growth.

Building a Strong Foundation

Strong Foundations are not built by accident. Parents can build a strong Foundation by being very intentional about a few key principles:

  • Give focused effort to personal growth.
  • Integrate spiritual growth into daily life. This becomes the basis for a strong spiritual identity.
  • Form supportive, encouraging relationships both in and outside the family.
  • Use talents to bless people in AND outside the home.
  • Grow in an understanding of past “baggage,” and its effects on life and parenting.
